Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located in northeastern Arizona, 3 miles off US Highway 191 in Chinle. This national monument has remarkable artifacts, rock images, and architecture. It is one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes in North America. What makes this so unique, is that Canyon de Chelly sustains a community of Navajo people even today.

Visitor Center

The visitor center is open during the following hours.
  • Daily: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Canyon de Chelly Activities & Tour Guides

Horseback riding, hiking, photography, scenic flights and jeep tours are just some of the outdoor activities popular with visitors. Jeeping and hiking to the bottom of the canyon require a permit and a Navajo guide. The fees for either tour are $15 per hour. Interpretive activities and talks are also available.

Secinic Drives
South Rim Drive: Offers 7 overlooks of the canyon and ruins from the road. The road is a dead end.
North Rim Road: Is a through road with spur roads to 4 overlooks which can be viewed from the parking lot.

Canyon de Chelly Camping

Cottonwood Campground

Is open year round with limited facilities. Reservations for group sites of 15 or more can be made by contacting Canyon de Chelly visitor center. Backcountry camping is allowed with an authroized Navajo guide.

Canyon de Chelly Pets

Canyon de Cheely allows pets to be walked on roads as long as they are on a leash. Pets may not be left unattended in a vehicle or campsite.

There are no area Dog Kennels that offer Boarding.
